The Unresolved
Thu Oct 6, 12:00p - 4:00p
CellSpace Art Gallery
In a gallery we’re accustomed to assuming that what we see is finished: a completed thought, a branded message, an assuredly executed product. However, what happens in the studio is often far from the conclusions usually presented to the public. There are failed experiments, unfinished sentences, inconclusive outcomes. There is a sense of journeying into uncharted territory, a glimmer of an idea not yet seen or stated. This is what keeps us coming back! For “The Unresolved”, we’re seeking to share with you some of the process; a few of the ideas not yet crystallized. It’s going to be vulnerable, and maybe a little messy, but hopefully burgeoning with new discoveries. Join us from 7-11 pm: Aoife Crofts, http://www.missionartistsunited.org/artists/471 Beth Davila Waldman, www.bethwaldman.com Jon Fischer, http://feather2pixels.com Michelle Guintu, www.michelleguintu.blogspot.com Richard Castaneda,www.castanedastudio.com Vanesa Gingold, http://vanesa.gingold.org Beth Waldman, Aoife Crofts, Vanesa Gingold, Michelle Guintu, madpotterdwyer

SMS Presents: UZERONET
Fri Jan 27, 12:00p - 6:00p
Reception: Fri Jan 27, 12:00p - 6:00p
CELLspace
Subterranean Mountaintop Seaside (SMS), the DJ/VJ art duo, come together for their first headlining show in San Francisco to present UZERONET, an exploratory art performance combining elements of DJing (skratching, mixing, cutting) with audio-reactive visuals. This event will also function as an art show with both analog and digital pieces on display. UZERONET focuses on interactions between the systems that exist within the organic and inorganic. The artists utilize their respective crafts to carve a unique niche for themselves, forcing the digital to function as a reflector of the analog. How can sound dictate structural form? How can a natural pattern be turned into a digital system? How can we build worlds from the basic elements, deconstruction and reinterpreting existing media in order to produce new, more efficient, sustainable patterns of thought? UZERONET will be followed by an after party in the CELLspace concert venue, hosting a number of DJs, including a dubstep set from SMS, and a set by Critical Akklaim. There will be a full bar!

Madrone Art Bar presents MARCH MADNESS
Mon Mar 5, 10:00a - Tue May 1, 2:00p
Reception: Wed Mar 14, 11:00a - 2:00p
Madrone Art Bar
Why March Madness? People often ask the question, “Why is Madrone called an Art Bar?” Personally I think it’s a stupid question, as if its not obvious. However the simplest answer is to compare the logic to that of a Sports bar. A sports bar has TV’s and shows sports, our focal point here is ART. Thus in relation to a sports bar’s coverage of the NCAA college basketball tournament, I decided to hand out mini-basketball hoops to 15 artists. There were no rules whatsoever placed upon them. Participating Artists: Miguel Felipe, Anthony Grant, Cliff Hengst, Terrance Hughes, Gregory Ito, Steve Javiel, Jeremiah Jenkins, Andrew McClintock, Dennis McNulty, William Henry Owens IV, Victor Reyes, Mr Rogers, Alphonzo Solorzano, Mitch Temple, Daniel Valdez

"Urban Planning," A Solo Exhibition by Lauren Smith
Thu May 10, 12:00p - 4:00p
Reception: Thu May 10, 12:00p - 4:00p
CELLspace Art Gallery
“Urban Planning” is a solo exhibition by multimedia artist Lauren Smith incorporating painting, drawing, installation and sculpture. The show conceptually explores the imagery and function of gutters and their downspout counterparts within a gallery setting. The exhibition offers a dueling dialogue between the natural and urban landscapes. In most cases there is an intentional reference to water and its destructive capabilities. However, the extreme calm and order seen in the works communicates a certain level of control over or complacency towards the threats of water. Smith is a visiting artist in residence from Mount Laurel, New Jersey. This exhibition displays the work she has produced since moving to San Francisco in January just four short months ago. The opening reception is on Thursday May 10th, from 7-11pm at CELLspace Gallery, 2050 Bryant Street between 18th and 19th. Otherwise view by appointment by contacting Smith directly via email at laurensmithstudio(at)gmail.com. Free admission. Alcoholic beverages available by donation.

Jonathan Judge Art Show
Fri Jul 6, 12:00p - 3:00p
Reception: Fri Jul 6, 12:00p - 3:00p
Secret-Studios
Please join us for first Friday in July at Secret-Studios with new paintings by Jonathan Judge. The paintings are larger than life depicting raw, human emotion. There will be wine, snacks, art and good conversation. We hope to see you there! The Art: This show is about relationships real and imagined. Each painting explores the exchange that occurs when an individual's eyes entwine with those of another human being- the impressions shaped by passing glances, defiant stares, a vacant gaze. Some of the subjects in this collection were wholly contrived, some live and breathe among us, but all of them capturing imagination. The Artist: Jonathan Judge believes the decline of the drive in theater directly correlates with the popularization of spray on tans, plastic flowers, and the music of Phil Collins. His interest in art began in kindergarten after discovering a marketplace for the naked crayon drawings he produced of the school's nuns (this venture ended badly). Jonathan currently resides in Denver and manages a non-profit working to reduce Meth use in the state of Colorado.

Paintings by Beth Davila Waldman www.bethwaldman.com For three decades now, Waldman has been setting up camp around the world. From her Princeton sandbox to the Plaza of Sonoma, she has worked from what is revealed by site and the fingerprints she imparts always with the help of strangers. Her art considers the history of the materials used to construct not only the streets and buildings of the site, but also the experience of the local community. From the architectural language of selected landscapes, materials from or inspired by imaginary & actual sites, and the stories of those residing in those spaces, the framework for her artwork is constructed. Most recently, Waldman returned from a trip to Arequipa, Peru, a place she has visited many times over her life. To Waldman, Arequipa is not only a tourist destination, but her maternal homeland. “The Absense of Presence” shares a side of Arequipa that is not typically seen. The paintings invite you into the streets of Arequipa and the homes and lives of generations of natives.

Masquerade
Thu Oct 25, 10:00a - Sat Nov 17, 6:00a
Reception: Thu Oct 25, 12:00p - 3:00p
Arc Gallery
San Francisco’s Arc Gallery announces Masquerade, a national exhibition of sinister, macabre, and camouflaged works that create a virtual masquerade ball. Juror Jack Fischer selected forty works from artists who were encouraged to push the envelope in interpreting the masquerade theme. Obfuscation of the truth…clearly the conceit of this exhibition for me is about what’s hiding in plain sight. We all know that moment when we become the mask, when the suit becomes the man. And there is that moment of truth when we reveal to ourselves what everyone else sees through the scrim. That moment is what interests me. That moment when we can all see what we really stand for and there is no way that the mask can serve us again. It is the “tell,” the “reveal” from which there is no coming back. Jack Fischer is the owner of Jack Fischer Gallery at 49 Geary in San Francisco. His gallery exhibits work from a diverse group of artists that fall under the rubrics of 'outsider, folk, contemporary, naive, visionary, self-taught, and intuitive.' - Visit www.jackfischergallery.com ARTISTS Three Juror’s Choice awards were bestowed to the works that expressed the most imaginative interpretation of Masquerade: Virginia artist Courtney Murphy’s painting, Soliloquy, twists the neoclassical image of a woman in a formal satin gown by revealing only a fragment of her allure, and story, to the viewer. Dr. Murphy teaches at the Art Institute of Washington Northern Virginia, and holds an M.F.A. from New York Academy of Art, as well as a B.A. from University of California Davis. San Francisco artist Michelle Peckham’s digital image, Fight or Flight, explores emotional and physical transformations during breast cancer treatment and beyond. She holds a Master’s degree in Interior Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from Scripps College. Polish-born artist Michal Wisniowski’s mixed media painting, Eastern Block #10, investigates his memories of Communist oppression through the metaphor of an architectural motif. The ubiquitous gray architecture exemplifies the mundane activities that took place within them, as well as the secrecy, torture and governance that ruled the lives of Polish citizens. Wisniowski currently resides in the Bay Area. IcTus Gallery is pleased to announce the “Rituals of Water,” a solo exhibition of the works of Rodney Ewing, co-curated by Hanna Regev. In “Rituals of Water”, Ewing examines the role of water as an allegorical agent of disruption and change in the history of people of African descent. Water as motif figures greatly in the African Diaspora, in the wake of experiences that include abductions, transport onto slave ships, and immersion into an alien culture via baptism that removes traces of past beliefs and traditions. Water has also served as a weapon to scatter activists during the Civil Rights Movement, and as a reckoning and catastrophe for the mostly poor and African American communities of New Orleans living on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River during Hurricane Katrina. Ewing renders the centuries long sweep of this historical timeline of water and the African Diaspora. Large-scale drawing and installations are captured in four thematic sections: Transition (Middle Passage), Transformation (Baptism), Resistance (Civil Rights Movement), and Dispersal (Hurricane Katrina). With this construct, Ewing has produced a record of how even a basic, mundane element is transformed by a people’s history into a transcendent and at times malevolent force.

Living the Dream: Status, Luxury and America
Sat Jan 19, 10:00a - 1:00p
Reception: Sat Jan 19, 10:00a - 1:00p
Studio 17 Gallery
Angie Crabtree and her 13-year-old student Jessie Rai invite you to their exhibition Living the Dream: Status, Luxury and America opening Saturday, January 19th, 2013 from 6-9pm at Studio 17 Gallery. Enter into the American Dream with painted and drawn reproductions of giant “benjamins” and bling among other luxury items. Studio 17 is located at 3265 17th St., Suite 402. Gallery viewing by appointment from January 13-26th. Additionally, time-lapse films will display the process and completion of collaborative works. Blank checks will be offered for visitors to fill out their own dreams, which will be hung on a dream board creating a perpetually changing artwork. In the show, Angie Crabtree combines paintings, drawings and sculpture to depict stereotypical elements of the American Dream: money, image, and power. Her paintings magnify objects including lotto tickets, diamonds, blank checks, and “benjamins.” In her series, Green is the New Bling, realistically drawn mixed media portraits of contemporary American icons including Barack Obama and Steve Jobs are renaissance-inspired, haloed and crowned in natural materials including moss, sugar, and wood veneer. Collectively, the same materials embellish a set of wearable accessories to create a flashy, Go Green fashion trend. Jessie Rai, age 13, has been developing her work alongside Crabtree for the past six years. She attends the Santa Rosa Charter School for the Arts, and commutes weekly to San Francisco to her shared studio with Crabtree. Her most recent works include detailed ink drawings of high end foods. Displayed as diptychs, the pieces serve as a commentary on social status pertaining to luxury foods, and the idea of quality over quantity.

Peaceable Kingdom: Animals Real and Imagined
Sun Mar 3, 12:00a - Sun May 19, 12:00a
Bedford Gallery at Lesher Center for the Arts
Peaceable Kingdom: Animals Real and Imagined is devoted to investigating our storied and rich relationship with the animal world. This national exhibition was juried by Stephanie Cannizzo, Associate Curator at the Berkeley Art Museum and Cathy Kimball, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. Peaceable Kingdom explores the presence of animals in the visual arts and how they appear as metaphors, totems, objects of fear, and sources of emotional attachment and affection. The Bedford Gallery received over 400 artist submissions for this juried show. After much deliberation, our jurors have selected 58 artists from around the U.S. to participate. The artworks chosen by our jurors represent a range of media, from traditional sculptural and painting practices to conceptually oriented mixed media installations. Peaceable Kingdom explores the role animals have played in our shared cultural and artistic imagination. The history of human and animal interaction is filled with tales of failed domestication, unusual friendships, and fearsome predators. From Kipling’s ferocious Shere Khan to early imperial menageries, human fascination with the animal kingdom has run the gamut from emotional connection, to economic exploitation, and even scientific curiosity. Throughout all of these interactions, however, the sense of wonder we feel when we encounter animal life has been an enduring theme that has informed their continued and abiding presence in the visual arts.

PhotographsPlus is a mid?career solo exhibition of work by San Francisco based artist Shawn Ray Harris. This survey show includes three distinct series of work created over the last 15 years. Using his camera as sketchbook, Shawn creates complex and whimsical composite images and constructions featuring urban landscapes and the spirits which inhabit them. Starting with his SCULPTOGRAPHY series, Harris created large three dimensional mixed media assemblages that incorporate multiple photographs. Represented pieces include “Unleashing the White Collared Marionette” and “American Landmarks”. Subsequent work from the CIVIC SERAPHIMS series presents edgy urban imagery juxtaposed with floral embellishments in a homage to Alfons Mucha in the Art Nouveau style. The third series of Harris’ most recent work titled HADAPTATION is a collection of light hearted street photos featuring Manimals set in quintessential San Francisco locals.

Enchanted by the ever changing urban landscape of the City, Vagn’s passion for painting was renewed by the sentiment and imagery of Bay Area landmarks. Exploring art with an impressionist lens, he thickens and layers acrylic paint with palette knives- sculpting the canvas into a textured shock of color, perspective and movement. Vagn has shown at Perch in San Francisco, Convert in Berkeley and has enjoyed two successful single artist shows (both in San Francisco). In addition, he has been an invited contributor to auctions for several local Bay Area charities including the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP), SF AIDS Foundation (AIDS Lifecycle). Vagn has long credited his 3rd grade teacher with his first real introduction to art; remembering her role in his life, Vagn volunteers as a painting instructor for local second grade students.
